Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo endorses gaming as the future of entertainment and critiques the film industry at the 2022 D.I.C.E. Summit.
Joe Russo, one of the directors of Avengers: Endgame, declared at a recent talk that gaming will be the future of entertainment.
Russo recently spoke with Epic Games Chief Creative Officer Donald Mustard as part of an event for the 2022 D.I.C.E. Summit. In the conversation, titled “The Future of Media: World-Building and Universe Expansion,” Russo and Mustard considered the impact future technology will have on media and storytelling. Russo believes video games will be the future of entertainment, saying, “I think the revolution comes from the gaming side because that’s where the technology is.”
“The future is going to be virtual,” he added, noting that the future of the Meta’s (formerly Facebook) metaverse depends on which companies lead the development while admitting he’s skeptical that Meta is up to the task. Instead, Russo believes gaming companies are better suited to fully realize the metaverse. “It’s a gaming company in my opinion that is going to be the most potent entertainment company in the world,” he explained, adding that narrative is key to creating an immersive metaverse. Gaming companies, in his opinion, have the necessary experience with narrative and technology to create an immersive virtual world.
In a separate conversation with VentureBeat, Russo explained his move away from film — an industry in which he feels there’s little innovation. “It’s so predictable,” he said. “I don’t care whether it’s an art film or a commercial movie. They have the same level of predictability.” Russo wants to innovate new forms of storytelling but finds that film studios aren’t willing to invest in the necessary technology. In the gaming world, meanwhile, Russo has found people like Mustard who share his vision for the future of entertainment.
Russo’s thoughts on the future of entertainment and criticism of the film industry are notable considering his success as a director. Along with his brother Anthony, Joe was part of the directorial duo that made Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War. The Russo Brothers have also directed Emmy-winning episodes of Arrested Development and the recent Apple TV+ drama Cherry, starring Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s Tom Holland.
Russo’s next directorial effort is Netflix’s The Gray Man, and he’s also serving as a producer on Extraction 2 and a television adaptation of Valiant Entertainment’s Quantum and Woody.
