Frances Evans Obituary (1921 – 2021) – Lubbock, TX – Legacy.com

Our loving mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend Frances Evans went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 16, 2021. The family will celebrate her life of 100 years at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at the First Christian Church. Her family will host a time of fellowship and remembrance from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. On January 17, 1921, Frances was born to James and Addie Belle Meharg in Italy, TX. As a child she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, missing the start of every school year because she was needed by her family to pick cotton. During her years at Italy High School, Frances excelled in all academic areas and was captain of the girls’ basketball team. Frances attended Hillsboro Junior College and graduated from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, Texas in 1941. Frances was the first in her family to receive a college degree. During WWII and before beginning her teaching career, she worked a summer as “Rosie the Riveter” in a munitions plant in Ft Worth Texas. Her remarkable 41 years of teaching began in Edinburg, Texas. It was on a concrete slab where she first taught Health and PE to 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade girls. She also taught in Brady, Waxahachie, San Angelo, Snyder, Temple, and Waco. Her final 17 years were spent here in Lubbock, Texas at Atkins Junior High teaching American and Texas History. In 1983 the honorable society of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas named her as the first recipient of Texas History Teacher of the Year. Frances was honored at their 92nd annual DRT convention in Galveston, Texas. She loved learning. After receiving a Masters in Education from Texas Tech in 1967, she continued her studies, almost earning a Doctorate Degree. She was a known historian in the Lubbock area and was a requested speaker for many local organizations including The Ranching Heritage Headquarters. Frances wrote a book for her children called, “Cameos”, it is a collection of her writings. Her favorite hobby was playing bridge, although she was quite skilled at dominoes. She was an active member at First Christian Church in the Harvester Sunday School Class for many years. And was a founding member of the Silver Stars. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gama. Frances was married to the love of her life Jesse Evans for 56 years before his passing in 2004.

Survivors include her children, Linda (Ronnie) Taylor, Bobby (Mendy) Evans; grandchildren, Tyson Taylor, Tiffany Williamson, Tyler Evans, Kelsey Evans, Shelby Evans; 7 great-grandchildren and sister, Hulane Chambers.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James Meharg; husband, Jesse Evans; father, James Meharg; mother, Addie Meharg.
