BURKBURNETT BOYS 64, GLEN ROSE 62

MINERAL WELLS – T.J. Newton put Burkburnett on his back and carried the Bulldogs across the finish line Tuesday.

The senior guard knocked down four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, leading the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind 64-62 victory against Glen Rose in a Region I-4A bi-district matchup. The Bulldogs advance to play Fort Worth Dunbar in the area round at a date, time and site to be determined.

Newton finished with a game-high 37 points but none were more important than the 12 he scored in the fourth quarter.

Burkburnett trailed the entire game, including a 56-46 deficit entering the fourth quarter. Newton got hot from behind the arc, finishing with double the points Glen Rose scored (6) in the fourth quarter. He was the lone Bulldog in double figures.

HIRSCHI BOYS 67, GATESVILLE 41

ALEDO – Ernest Young dropped 30 points and Hirschi played suffocating defense in the second half, leading to a 67-41 victory against Gatesville in Region I-4A bi-district action Tuesday. The Huskies advance to play Fort Worth Western Hills in the area round at a time, date and site to be determined.

The Huskies held a slim 18-14 lead after the first quarter but extended it to 40-26 by halftime. They held Gatesville to just 15 second-half points.

Young was joined in double figures by Jamarion Carroll (16) and Jermeree Ingram (10).

GIRLS REGION I-5A TOURNEY FIELD SET

The field for the first girls basketball Region I-5A Tournament being held in Wichita Falls has been completely set.

Amarillo High and Lubbock Monterey punched their regional tournament berths Tuesday night, joining a field that includes Mansfield Timberview and Lake Dallas. The tournament begins Friday at Kay Yeager Coliseum.

The first semifinal features No. 5 Amarillo High (30-5) vs. No. 11 Mansfield Timberview (26-8) at 4 p.m. Friday.

No. 19 Lubbock Monterey (30-8) meets No. 10 Lake Dallas (32-4) in the second semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

The two semifinal winners play for a state championship berth in the region final at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Amarillo High earned its berth Tuesday, defeating No. 7 Lubbock-Cooper, 63-50. The Lady Sandies have established themselves as perennial state contenders, most recently winning Class 5A championships in 2018 and 2019. This is their first regional tournament appearance since 2020.

Monterey, on the other hand, is making its first regional tournament appearance since 1996. The Lady Plainsmen notably fell short in 2020 when Rider upset them in the regional quarterfinals. Monterey earned its regional berth by dominating Canyon Randall, 74-48.
