Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesIf you’re reading Texas city names like Montague and Palestine like we think you are, then you’re probably just as Texan as the movie star-turned daytime show host Drew Barrymore.
The 50 First Dates star, now host of the Drew Barrymore Show, appeared on local Dallas news station CBS DFW on Thursday to try and pronounce the names of Texas cities with meteorologist Anne Elise.
Barrymore, to the delight of Elise, came out strong easily belting out the name of a Texas town that’s probably harder to spell than say — Waxahachie.
Then she nearly nailed Mexia (meh • hay • a) and aced Sachse (sack • see). Then things went downhill fast.
When some see the name Montague, you might think of the family name from Romeo and Juliet, but as Barrymore discovers, whoever named the town did not have Shakespeare in mind. It’s pronounced mon • tayg.
She then struggles with other names like Palestine and Italy, which are not pronounced as they are in common vernacular because the people who named those towns are possibly sadists.
But if Barrymore pronounced as I did when I saw them on a map or in the video, that makes her an honorary Texan in my book.
